People and art are concerned with the fear of emptiness since people attempt to harmonise feeling with thought. Human existence comprises birth, becoming an adult by passing stages of vigorous adolescence and maturity, and release through death. On this path we are confronted with interruptions and irritations. In his piece “jamais” Steffen Fuchs approaches these aspects. “jamais” illustrates how it is, when it happens, what it does to us und where it leads us to.

Besides the art works the Hermitage in St. Petersburg presents a further, “living interior” – the museum staff who guard the art works. “Empire” is dedicated to the story of these witnesses and explores the Hermitage through their eyes.
The dance project reflects upon institutionally determined constellations in a museum: those between the art works as objects being gazed at; between visitors as observers of the art works; the staff supervising the visitors’ conduct; and in an empathic sense the art works themselves as active players.

Empire is supported by Goethe-Institut München. Coproducer: Sasha Waltz & Guests in the framework of the support programme »Choreographen der Zukunft«, which is sponsored by BASF SE as main sponsor. Sasha Waltz & Guests is supported by funds of the Capital Cultural Fund in Berlin.

Vita Takako Suzuki

Takako Suzuki, born in Japan, lives in Berlin where she has regularly worked together with the dance company „Sasha Waltz & Guests“ since 1992. She studied dance in Tokyo and at the HBK Braunschweig. The idea for “Empire” emerged from a residency in St. Petersburg during which she intensively investigated the work of the museum guards at the Hermitage Museum.
